Updated August 7, 2026 · Launch day +1. Routes are verified against the in-game tutorial and beta footage; exact frame data will be refined as the community digs into training mode.
Marvel Tokon's combo system looks intimidating because it's a 4v4 tag fighter, but the foundation is actually simple: three attack buttons, three chain routes, and one universal tag extension. This guide breaks down the system in the order you should learn it, then gives you practical BnBs for the best beginner characters.
- Standard Edition $59.99 on PS5 and PC. A good fight stick or pad makes the combo routes much easier.
The Three Link Attack Routes
Link Attacks are the accessible chain system. Mash the same button to chain into a finisher, then spend gauge for the payoff:
The Universal Beginner Combo
This is the first route every player should drill in Training Mode. It teaches L/M/H chains, Skill cancel timing, Assemble Rush and follow-up attacks all at once.
Training Mode is where you turn these notations into muscle memory. Set the dummy to "Block After First Hit" to test your timing.
Skill Gauge & Assemble Gauge Explained
Two meters run the tag system. Mismanage either and you will lose rounds you should have won.
Skill Gauge
- Shared across all four characters.
- Skill: 25% — special moves and combo extensions.
- Super Skill: 50% — cinematic super.
- Ultimate Skill: 100% — invincible startup, huge damage.
Captain America builds this gauge faster than anyone, which is why he is the best beginner point character. Command Inputs (motion inputs) build slightly more gauge than Quick Skill button presses, so there is a long-term incentive to learn motions.
Assemble Gauge
The Assemble Gauge powers assist calls and tag extensions. Each teammate is assigned an assist type before the match (forward for projectiles, down for anti-air, etc.). Managing this meter separates good teams from great ones — blow it all on random assists and you cannot escape pressure later.
Tag Mechanics: When and How to Swap
- Tag Button: dedicated input (L2 on PS5). No longer shared with the assemble button.
- During combo: after an Assemble Rush or Assist Attack hit, tag to take control.
- Defensive tag: risky, but can bail you out of pressure if you have gauge.
- Pre-battle: you can reorder your team before the round starts.
Character-Specific Beginner BnBs
Captain America
Cap's BnB is the textbook beginner route. Shield throw controls neutral, and his confirms are generous.
Neutral tip: throw shield to check approach, then confirm into the combo above. Don't throw shield at full screen — it recovers slowly and good players will dash under it.
Wolverine
Wolverine's damage comes from simple Heavy chains and Berserker Barrage-style Skills. He is the best character for learning pressure because his buttons are fast and his conversions are honest.
Spider-Man
Spider-Man rewards aerial play. His web zip lets him convert stray hits into full combos from unusual angles.
Ms. Marvel
Ms. Marvel has the cleanest hitboxes of the beginner cast. Her combos are straightforward and she converts well from jump-ins.
Stylish Rating: Why Variety Matters
Marvel Tokon rewards you for using different tools in the same combo. The Stylish Rating bonus improves minimum damage scaling when you mix Skills. This is a clever piece of design — it stops players from repeating one optimal loop forever and pushes you to explore your whole team.
Defensive Options: Don't Just Block
Marvel Tokon gives you tools to escape unblockable setups:
- Assemble Counter: preemptive escape tool.
- Crossover: evasive option against pressure strings.
If you are getting opened up repeatedly, practice these instead of trying to block harder. They cost resources but turn losing situations into neutral resets.
